Life Sciences - Marine Track (.M.Sc)
What will you study, and why should you study at Bar-Ilan?
Beneath the surface of lakes and oceans, intricate biological systems shape marine life and sustain the Earth’s ecological balance. From biological clocks that regulate oceanic processes, to the role of viruses in the global carbon cycle, and the delicate organization of coral reefs, marine biology explores the hidden mechanisms that drive entire ecosystems.
The Marine Biology track at Bar-Ilan University is a graduate program in the life sciences designed for students seeking to deepen their understanding of marine systems and investigate how marine organisms function, adapt, and influence their environment.
The program provides advanced research training in key areas such as marine biology and ecology, biological rhythms in marine systems, coral biology, and marine biogeochemistry. Students engage in hands-on scientific work under the mentorship of leading researchers, join active research groups, and utilize cutting-edge technologies and innovative methodologies. This combination of theory, experimentation, and data analysis prepares graduates to conduct independent research and contribute to the global scientific community.
Career Opportunities
The intensive research training provided by the Marine Biology track opens doors to a wide range of career paths in both the public and private sectors. The scientific knowledge and skills acquired are highly relevant to fields such as:
Research institutes and academic centers focused on marine systems
Environmental and conservation organizations
Biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and biological materials companies
Seafood industries and aquaculture
Research laboratories in hospitals and scientific institutes
Environmental and scientific consulting firms
Life sciences and environmental startups
Pursuing a PhD and a career in academic research
Program Structure
The Master’s program in Marine Biology is offered as an intensive, two-year research track, with studies and research beginning annually on October 1st.
The program comprises a total of 40 credit points (CP), divided as follows:
24 CP of coursework, including 22 CP in life sciences courses and 2 CP in two master’s seminars.
16 CP research project (thesis) – the core component of the degree.
The final grade is determined according to university regulations, with 75% based on the research project and 25% on coursework.
Program Courses
Students may also take up to 4 CP of relevant courses from other departments, subject to approval.
The research proposal is submitted at the end of the first year and represents a key milestone in shaping the thesis. Changes in research topic or supervisor may require additional coursework, in accordance with faculty requirements.
Activities and Practical Experience
The Marine Biology track is built on active, hands-on research from the very start. Students participate in projects exploring topics such as coral and phytoplankton biology, biological rhythms in marine systems, and human–ocean interactions.
Through this research experience, students develop essential practical skills, including:
Applying advanced research methods in molecular biology, genetics, microscopy, and imaging
Designing experiments, working with complex biological systems, and analyzing scientific data
Presenting findings in departmental seminars and engaging in critical discussion of research results
Admission Requirements
Applicants must have a minimum average of 80 in a relevant undergraduate degree. Candidates with an average below 85 will be invited for an admissions interview.
Students are required to identify a faculty supervisor at the time of application, as admission is contingent on the supervisor’s formal approval.
It is recommended to contact potential supervisors before applying and to review their research areas, which are available on the faculty website.
