About the Personal Genomics and Biomedical Informatics Program

In medical research and practice, the remarkable growth of the amount of data in all areas of patients’ care, along with the vast information accumulated in the various genome projects, create challenges requiring new methods and approaches. The constant decrease in the genomic sequencing costs leads toward a situation where every patient has his/her own personal genomic map. It became a major challenge for physicians to utilize this information for better patient care and medical research.

Other technological breakthroughs, such as the smartphone revolution, electronic medical records (EMRs), as well as social networks, wearable devices, 3D printers, augmented reality etc., create a revolution in the medical world, often called the Digital Health Revolution. This revolution is characterized by a significant improvement of the predictive capabilities, personalization, disease prevention and participation of patients in the medical process.

Israel has long been a leader in the Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics disciplines. The Sheba Medical Center - Tel Hashomer (the largest hospital in Israel), in collaboration with the Computational Biology Program at Bar-llan University, are holding for the seventh year a unique Personal Genomics and Biomedical Informatics program for physicians, researchers and High-Tech/Bio-Tech executives.

The program’s courses are taught by leading experts in these fields, professors from both Sheba Medical Center and Bar-Ilan University. The program is endorsed by the Israeli Ministry of Health and the Israeli Medical Association. In previous years the program was offered to Israeli physicians in a standard classroom / computer room setting, with on-line lectures as an additional feature. The feedback from the participants was very positive, stating that the program had opened them the door toward a new era of precision in medicine. Thus, this year we are launching an online program that will enable international audience to participate in the program.

The Target Audience of the Program

  • Physicians from all specialties and in all stages of their medical career
  • Researchers in the areas of Medicine/Biology or Computer Science
  • High-Tech/Bio-Tech executives

The Goal of the Program

The goal is to offer scientific knowledge and practical tools for integration of the data revolution in medicine and Digital Health. The program trains its attendees to understand and use advanced computational technologies, as well as innovative approaches when treating patients and conducting medical research. This also includes:

  • Personal genome mapping of patients and understanding its medical implications.
  • Predicting future health condition of the individual patient, early detection of diseases and prediction of their progression paths.
  • Discovery of phenomena, correlations and biomedical mechanisms that were previously unknown, thanks to the incredible amount of growth in health information technology and computational advancements.

The Program Structure

Dates: From November 2016 through February 2017

The program is comprised of 6 academic online courses that will be offered over the course of 3 months.

All the online lectures use state of the art technology, and can be viewed at any time. Most courses have also hands-on practice lessons, which will be available online as well.
